PEKEWUH

Saya punya keinginan untuk menjadi seorang debater sesaat. Saya bosan selalu berbicara di belakang layar. Saya bosan membuang-buang pikiran yang tidak terbuang di tempatnya. Saya ingin orang mendengar dan melihat sampah-sampah yang berasal dari otak saya yang ingin saya buang di depan mata mereka semua. Saya ingin mereka juga mencium baunya, tidak hanya saya saja yang menghirup bau busuk tempat sampah di otak saya. Tapi sepertinya saya akan terus berkata "tapi" karena pertimbangan budaya. Yaa.. "wong Jowo" identik dengan kata "pekewuh" untuk menggantikan kata "tapi" sebagai analogi bahasa, menurut saya. Terkadang saya berfikir, kenapa saya bisa berpikir sia-sia dan menganggapnya sia-sia karena ke Jowo'an saya. Tapi sejatinya saya tidak pernah menyesal karena saya lahir di lingkungan "Jowo", yang saya sedihkan, kenapa saya belum mampu menjadi seperti Ibu Megawati, Ibu Kartini dan banyak wanita-wanita hebat lainnya, yang mempertunjukkan hasil karya otak mereka yang mampu mempengaruhi dunia menjadi lebih baik, dan pastinya dengan sedikit bumbu "pekewuh"
Otak saya kelamaan bisa bocor dan mengeluarkan bau busuk yang sangat busuk hingga orang-orang enggan untuk menghirupnya. Salah saya juga kan, membuat oksigen yang Tuhan beri jadi tercemar dan orang "pekewuh" untuk menghirupnya. Jadi saya rasa saya perlu banyak senjata tajam untuk mengeluarkan banyak sampah yang ada di otak saya. tanpa PEKEWUH. ^_^
SElama saya rasa sampah itu berbau harum nantinya jika orang yang membaunya tidak mampu memandang kedepan dengan kabut yang tebal namun ia akan melindungimu.
Saya takun, jika saya akan pesimis untuk maju dan menunjukkkan sampah saya.

Talking about ELT



Reflection of English Language Teaching in Indonesia

English language is considered as foreign language in Indonesia but not the second language (Rajagompalan, 2004). Basically, foreign language and second language has different meaning. Foreign language is a language which people learnt, but did not use it in daily life. While second language is a language which people learnt and used it in daily life but it is not the first language or local language. English language has been taught in Indonesia since 1967 in line with the decision of Indonesian Minister of Education and Culture. Then English language officially became the main subject in school since 1994 (Ma’mun, 2012 ). Bahasa Indonesia is still used as united language in Indonesia and most of Indonesian people use it as daily language. Bahasa Indonesia has function as the medium of instruction in educational institution and local language is considered as local identity for supporting culture. The language policy in Indonesia stated that English is considered as first foreign language that is taught started in elementary school (Soro, 2012). Indonesian children in some region have been learning English since in elementary school and using Bahasa Indonesia and local language as a language of instruction and in the learning process of English.
I have been learning two languages; Bahasa Indonesia and Javanese Languages, when I was child.  My first language that I learned was Indonesia. My parents always used Bahasa Indonesia to communicate with their children so that I always used Bahasa to make a daily conversation with my family and others. Thus, I usually used Bahasa in my daily life and other people who I spoke with. Then, when I was in kindergarten, I started to learn and know my local language from my grandmother. She taught me Javanese language and told me about how to use it because it has its own rule. She also told me about Javanese culture, belief and habitual in ancient time. I became know and understand about Javanese from her. Besides that, when I talked to my friends with Bahasa I felt too formal and I seemed unable to blend with them. Then, I think I had to speak Javanese because most of my friend spoke Javanese. It made me familiar with Javanese language. I always speak in Javanese language with my friends and sometimes with people who older than me.
My third language is English. I started to learn English when I was in fifth grade of elementary school and I could enjoy it. My English teacher taught me English with Bahasa as language of instruction to give explanation to his students. It helped us to understand and memorize the materials easier. My teacher also used some media like picture, props, music, and song to increase our attractiveness in learning English. However, I learned English just for two hours every week because it was still the local content (muatan lokal) in learning system. English language started to be the main subject when I was in junior high school. In junior high school my English teacher started to ask me and my friends to memorized vocabulary in English. I started to learn English through listening and speaking in second grade of junior high school. From those activities, I think it was useful for me because I could increase my English skill. After I graduated from junior high school I decided to study in vocational school tourism because I wanted to have ability which was focus on one field. In vocational school, my English learning process was not maximal because I just had four hours a week and I could not understand my teacher’s explanation in class because he just gave speech and did not give us examples or exercises. My teacher could not increase his students’ interest to learn English. Thus, when I was in third grade I decided to learn English in English Course to help me faced National Exam. In that course I learned more in speaking and listening rather than in reading and writing. Joining English course made me enjoyed to learn English and made me decided to choose English Language Education Study Program in Sanata Dharma University.
From my experience I have learnt three languages and I have to increase my skill on those languages. I enjoy my process to learn those languages until now. I enjoy to apply my English skill although I prefer to speak Bahasa and Javanese language in my daily conversation because those are my language identity.

Which one more enjoyable?

Indonesia has many kinds of entertainment and we have many choices. Modern performance and Traditional performance is the form of entertainment which people like to watch. The form of traditional performance such as kethoprak, wayang wong, theater and lenong. Whereas the kind of modern performance such as film, cinetron, and video. In this article, I’m going to talk about the differences between modern performance and traditional performance base on process to make and place to perform.
            Talk about the process to make a perform, traditional performance needs long time to prepare. Theater for example, they need to make up the strength of the body through physical exercise extra. They usually take time for approximately two months to prepare their body’s strength. Whereas modern performance, for example to make a film, they usually needs shorter time approximately one month for reading process and understanding the script after that they can start to the process of making a film.
After talking about the process to make, I will talk about the differences of place to perform between them. For traditional performance, they usually take place in open stage or perform building and the audience can watch directly the actors who involve in that perform. Different with modern performance, the audience just be able to watch by screen, such as if you watch film in the cinema or you watch in television and you can’t watch the actors directly.
In brief, traditional performances are rarely produced again because the manufacturing process that spend long time and the place that sometimes difficult to get. Whereas modern performance that only takes shorter time and that place to make it easy to get because they can take place in everywhere depends on the script. In traditional performance you can face to face with the actors and feel the ambiance that the story is made, also if we still want to watch traditional performance, it means that we helped to preserve our culture.

Language Teaching for the Future

The changing times gives huge effects in learning process nowdays. There are so many demands in education that forces educators and students to be more prepare to face the globalization in education aspect. Then it makes a change in learning practice faster and instantly, that is called McDonaldization. It is style on learning practice that emphasize on how meke the learning faster and fun without think hard for students and educators. From McDonaldization emerges McCoursebook as a media for learning. That is a book that have been arranged in such a way so that the students are able to understand it easier. It makes a reflection for educators how make a learning become more qualified, emphasize on how makes students think deeper about the knowledge that they have got. So that the students can make their own plan for their future.

McDonaldisasion in learning process makes standardisation and dehumanisation. It is going to give negative effects for learning process because it makes nonsense and makes the student don’t really get the main purpose from what they are learn. Instant learning process makes the students cannot think deeper. Students should be given large space to make experiment and make a mistake so that they can learn from the mistake and try to improve. It will give positive stimulus for them more brave to make decision and always try until the get the result that they are expected.
McDonalisation creates new media for language teaching, that is McCoursebook. The book gives easiness for teacher to explain and students to get the information without think hard. Students tend to find out information by computerizing that book. Moreover they insist to get information easier (Quinn, 2000). The book should be give explanation and essay question so the student expacts to analyze the question and try to give their opinion about the explanation before, it will make them think deeper and critical about the information that they get.
The writer gives a solution by making a plan for curriculum. This new curriculum which offer by Andrew Littlejohn (2001), expects for leaening process that emphasize on the ability of student to comprehend and think critically not only know about the knowledge. Andrew emphasis critical thinking in learning process. Thinking critically will provide a framework for understanding (Ten Cate,2004) The student are expected apply and expand their knowledge.
McDonaldisation is not the right choice for education, especially for student. They will find it too difficult to make dicision for the future, because they only know the default things wihout try to think broadly about the rela thing they are able to. Learning occurs when the learner gets the knowledge through the processing information by thinking (Ten Cate,2004). The students have to be directed to look through the other people’s thinking and analyze all informations they get before then try to make hypothesis. They should learn to make their plan and make dicision for some issues that they are faced then try to find the solutions for the issues. Learning and teaching is interplay on the process, so that students need qualified teacher who can guide and expand their way to think critically about the issue that they are learning about. Teacher as educator has big role to create learning process which has best quality.
