#

pikiran terkikis kata
mata buta karna pemaknaan

aku terlalu ringkih rupannya ...
aku hanya ingin lebih lantang bersuara

boleh aku ganti kata itu?

Refleksi

kamu benar
aku belum mampu memaknai kata
kamu benar
aku mengesampingkan rasa
kamu benar

aku memang lupa membunyikan alarm perhentian mimpi

lalu kamu dimana
di tumpukan teori-teori romansa?
di kotak-kotak perjuangan cinta?
di sampul-sampul majalah dewasa?

susah aku temukan
sulit di cari
ada dimana?

oh mungkin ruang sosial media yang biasa kamu kunjungi
aku ingat kamu pernah menyelipkan teori romansamu di timelineku
aku ingat kamu tawarkan kotak perjuangan cintamu di direct messageku

ah tapi kamu tidak lagi melihatku
kamu sibuk melihat yang lain
aku bingung
aku terbiasa
apa aku tunggu saja

Pena

di tempat ini aku bisa menulis.
aku tidak pandai menulis.
aku tidak pandai berucap
aku tidak pandai mendengar
aku hanya ingin menulis
aku hanya ingin berucap
dan hanya ingin mendengar
apa yang aku tulis,ucap,dan dengar
memang nampak samar
tapi aku hanya mau merasakannya saja

ucapan tidak selalu ku junjung tinggi
kata mereka diam itu emas
tapi mereka berkoar-koar tentang emas
aku tidak butuh emas
aku masih mampu menulis
aku memang ingin menulis
aku tidak pandai menulis

terlalu dini untuk mendengar tentang ideologi
terlalu pagi untuk menonton berita di televisi
tonton kartun saja
bermain saja dulu
bernyanyi saja yang lama
tertawa juga menarik untuk dilakukan
adil bukan untuk sebuah pagi
aku memang tidak butuh ideologi
aku ingin menulis
aku tidak pandai menulis

baca saja buku cerita anak-anak
penuh gambar dan warna-warni
lebih menarik kan dari koran pagi ini
nyayikan lagu anak-anak
lebih menarik kan dari lagu televisi

aku memang hanya ingin menulis saja
tulisanku bebas
tapi aku tidak menulis tentang demokrasi
tulisanku bebas
baca atau tidak
bebas
aku ingin menulis
aku tidak pandai menulis

Bahagia . . .

Marriage is a Private Affair
Short Story Analysis
Diana Kurniawati – 111214002

Marriage is a Private Affair by Chinua Achebe (1972) is a short story which tells about social culture in Igboland, Nigeria. The main characters are Okeke, Naemeka, and Nene. Okeke, Naemeka’s father, asks his son to get married with an Igbo woman whom he has chosen. He wants his son to get married with a woman who comes from the same tribe but Naemeka has already chosen Nene, a woman from the city of Logos, as Naemeka’s wife and Nene works as a teacher in Logos. Okeke does not approve their relationship because Nene is not an Igbo and she is a teacher. However, Naemeka cannot fulfill his father expectation. Therefore, Naemeka decides to marry Nene because he really loves her and they decide to stay in Logos.  After they are married and has two sons, Okeke still does not accept Nene in his family. At the end of the story, Okeke is only able to feel sad and regret about it in all his life. (Achebe, 1972). From this short story I am going to discuss about the tradition and belief in Igboland.
Chinua Achebe wrote this story based on Igbo’s culture. He grew up in Eastern Nigeria with Christian parents. He was educated in Christian school. His writing usually takes an issue about social, beliefs and religiosity (Harries, 1978). In Igboland, Christianity has a big role in people beliefs and customs; it means that Chinua Achebe lived in Christianity rules and culture. It influences in his short story – Marriage is a Private Affair – which describes Okeke as a person who upholds the culture and belief so that he does not want to betray it. Okeke insists on maintaining the custom that he considers as an important thing to the culture. In this story, Chinua Achebe tries to position himself as Okeke because he respects to his tradition.
Igbo village in Nigeria is a setting of place in this story and from the story the main focus is on the wedding tradition and belief in Igboland. Marriage in Igbo is focused on family so it means that marriage is a ceremony to connect not only two persons but also two families (Wigenbusch,_). In other statement stated that Marriage in Igboland is not only an affair between the husband and wife but also involves the village (Widjaja, 2000). In the story, Okeke, as a father, thinks that the connection of two families is going to be easier if each family comes from the same tribe. It can be easier because each family has the same way to do the ceremony and they have the same tradition of marriage. It is different from today situation that people have learnt about diversity and they try to accept different culture, tradition, and freedom. Therefore, in modern society there are many people from different culture interpret a marriage as their right to decide it. As an individual, they have the right to choose whom they are going to marry with without many rules which limits them. In Naemeka’s point of view about marriage in this story, he shows that marriage is not only about tradition but also feeling. He shows to his father that he is going to be happier if he can live with a woman whom he loves. He chooses Nene because he loves her and assures with his choice although he knows that his father will not accept her. Then, Igbo people also have a belief that a woman is not allowed to work and she should be a house wife as it is written in bible (Widjaja, 2000). Nene, as a modern woman, has a modern thinking about life and she has to survive on working. It occurs different perception between Igbo’s tradition and modern situation. In modern society, as human beings, each person is demanded to be independent and they should be able to protect themselves from the competition in a huge social communities. As a woman who lives in modern way she has to be independent to support herself and her family who live in a city.
In conclusion, Marriage is a Private Affair’s Chinua Achebe shows about the different perceptions of  tradition and the way to face life. It sometimes stands over in argument because of the rules of tradition and agrument between two generations. In ancient time, marriage should be based on the tradition and culture which is believed by parents. On the other hand, young generations view marriage is a private affair between two persons who are sure to live together and love each other. In addition, the huge diversity in nationalities and culture in the world often can create an obstacle on people’s relationship because each person wants to save their own culture and perception about tradition. Furthermore, each person has their own way to live their own life. This story shows that a tradition, belief and custom should not determine our future, choice and our right to shape our own future. Marriage is about feeling and private affair, it should not be forced by tradition and let each person to determine their own life because as adults, they have a mature thinking and they are able to decide and design their future.

PEKEWUH

The World As I See It

Jason Mraz

The world as I see it, is a remarkable place
A beautiful house in a forest, of stars in outer space.
From a birds eye view, I can see it has a well-rounded personality
From a birds eye view, I can see we are family.
It’s not hard for me to love you
Hard for me to love you
No it’s not a difficult thing.
It’s not hard for me to love you
Hard for me to love you Because you are the world to me.
Yeah the world as I see it, is a remarkable place Every man makes a difference And every mothers child is a saint

From a birds eye view I can see, we are spiralling down in gravity
From a birds eye view I can see, you are just like me.
It’s not hard for me to love you Hard for me to love you No it’s not a difficult thing. It’s not hard for me to love you Hard for me to love you Unconditionally.
No it’s not hard for me to love you Hard for me to love you No it’s not a difficult thing. It’s not hard for me to love you Hard for me to love you Because you are the world to me.

You are the mountain, you are the rock
You are the cord and you’re the spark
You are the eagle, you are the lark
You are the world and you’re remarkable
You’re the ocean eating the shore
You are the calm inside the storm
You’re every emotion, you can endure
You are the world, the world is yours.
(It’s not hard for me to love you Hard for me to love you
No it’s not a difficult thing. It’s not hard for me to love you Hard for me to love you Unconditionally)

No it’s not hard for me to love you
Hard for me to love you No it’s not a difficult
thing.
It’s not hard for me to love you Hard for me to love you
Unconditionally.
No it’s not hard for me to love you Hard for me to love you
No it’s not a difficult thing. It’s not hard for me to love you Hard for me to love you Because you are the world to me.
Yeah the world as I see it, is a remarkable place

Talking about ELT

Reflection of English Language Teaching in Indonesia
Diana Kurniawati / 111214002

English language is considered as foreign language in Indonesia but not the second language (Rajagompalan, 2004). Basically, foreign language and second language has different meaning. Foreign language is a language which people learnt, but did not use it in daily life. While second language is a language which people learnt and used it in daily life but it is not the first language or local language. English language has been taught in Indonesia since 1967 in line with the decision of Indonesian Minister of Education and Culture. Then English language officially became the main subject in school since 1994 (Ma’mun, 2012 ). Bahasa Indonesia is still used as united language in Indonesia and most of Indonesian people use it as daily language. Bahasa Indonesia has function as the medium of instruction in educational institution and local language is considered as local identity for supporting culture. The language policy in Indonesia stated that English is considered as first foreign language that is taught started in elementary school (Soro, 2012). Indonesian children in some region have been learning English since in elementary school and using Bahasa Indonesia and local language as a language of instruction and in the learning process of English.
I have been learning two languages; Bahasa Indonesia and Javanese Languages, when I was child.  My first language that I learned was Indonesia. My parents always used Bahasa Indonesia to communicate with their children so that I always used Bahasa to make a daily conversation with my family and others. Thus, I usually used Bahasa in my daily life and other people who I spoke with. Then, when I was in kindergarten, I started to learn and know my local language from my grandmother. She taught me Javanese language and told me about how to use it because it has its own rule. She also told me about Javanese culture, belief and habitual in ancient time. I became know and understand about Javanese from her. Besides that, when I talked to my friends with Bahasa I felt too formal and I seemed unable to blend with them. Then, I think I had to speak Javanese because most of my friend spoke Javanese. It made me familiar with Javanese language. I always speak in Javanese language with my friends and sometimes with people who older than me.
My third language is English. I started to learn English when I was in fifth grade of elementary school and I could enjoy it. My English teacher taught me English with Bahasa as language of instruction to give explanation to his students. It helped us to understand and memorize the materials easier. My teacher also used some media like picture, props, music, and song to increase our attractiveness in learning English. However, I learned English just for two hours every week because it was still the local content (muatan lokal) in learning system. English language started to be the main subject when I was in junior high school. In junior high school my English teacher started to ask me and my friends to memorized vocabulary in English. I started to learn English through listening and speaking in second grade of junior high school. From those activities, I think it was useful for me because I could increase my English skill. After I graduated from junior high school I decided to study in vocational school tourism because I wanted to have ability which was focus on one field. In vocational school, my English learning process was not maximal because I just had four hours a week and I could not understand my teacher’s explanation in class because he just gave speech and did not give us examples or exercises. My teacher could not increase his students’ interest to learn English. Thus, when I was in third grade I decided to learn English in English Course to help me faced National Exam. In that course I learned more in speaking and listening rather than in reading and writing. Joining English course made me enjoyed to learn English and made me decided to choose English Language Education Study Program in Sanata Dharma University.
From my experience I have learnt three languages and I have to increase my skill on those languages. I enjoy my process to learn those languages until now. I enjoy to apply my English skill although I prefer to speak Bahasa and Javanese language in my daily conversation because those are my language identity.
